Welcome to Hermosa Beach

Hermosa means beautiful in Spanish, and it's a very suitable name for this cozy little beach town in the South Bay area of Los Angeles county.

With its wide, flat beach, Hermosa Beach is one of the most popular places in the world for beach volleyball, and is home to the AVP Hermosa Beach Open tournament, which usually takes place mid June each year. With an average daytime air temperature of 75 °F and water temperature of 68 °F in the summer (winter temperatures are 65 °F and 50 °F respectively), the beach is, of course, also the center for other popular activities, such as sunbathing, surfing, kite-flying, and much more. In July and August, the city puts on free Sunset Concerts at the pier, bringing visitors from all over the LA area to the waters for an evening picnic and lots of fun.

The Strand runs along the beach, from Redondo Beach in the south to Santa Monica roughly 20 miles to the north of Hermosa Beach. On a typical day, you see thousands of people on rollerblades, skateboards, and bicycles, or jogging or just strolling along this path, enjoying the sun and the sights. Throughout the city, you also find plenty of parks, with lush green trees offering a nice shade on a warm day. The Hermosa Valley Greenbelt, a lovely linear trail running through the city from south to north, is filled with joggers in the mornings and evenings.

When the sun sets, Hermosa Beach offers a wide variety of food and entertainment, from the legendary Lighthouse Cafe to the trendy and sexy Blue 32, and everything in between. For blues lovers, Cafe Boogaloo offers great Cajun food to go with the excellent big-name talent on the stage. If you prefer your food without music, have your pick from some 50 restaurants, serving Sushi, Italian, Thai, Mexican, and pretty much any other type of food you can think of.

There are plenty of hotels in Hermosa Beach (seven at last count, and plenty more in nearby Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach), greeting visitors from around the world. On The Strand, you find the popular Beach House Hotel with 96 rooms and Sea Sprite Ocean Front Motel and Apartments.

If you're looking for a permanent place to live, Hermosa Beach gives you many choices. The Strand is lined by huge villas with multi-million dollar price tags. Moving inland, you find more reasonably priced bungalows, townhouses, multilevel homes and condos. While prices varies, be aware that California Association of Realtors (CAR) reported in July 2007 that Hermosa Beach was one of the top ten California cities with the highest median home prices ($1,205,000).
